Special lecture: “English Language Variation—Based on Yorkshire Dialect Material”

Today (March 14, 2024), the English Program at the School of Education and Liberal Arts organized a special lecture titled “English Language Variation—Based on Yorkshire Dialect Material” for second-year students enrolled in the course ENG63-223: Varieties of English.

The special lecture was delivered by Dr. Svetlana Koudria, Senior Lecturer at St. Petersburg State University and an expert in English and cross-continental cultural studies. Dr. Koudria emphasized the importance of dialects in shaping cultural identity. As English serves as a global lingua franca in various domains such as business, education, and tourism, embracing the diversity of English dialects enhances communication and promotes inclusivity in our interconnected world.

After the special lecture, students gained valuable insights into the significance of various language patterns, particularly the Yorkshire dialect, and their application in real-world situations and research. This outcome highlights the success of the event, as it aligns with the department’s goal of equipping students with both knowledge and practical application.
