Behind the Screens: GDH Subtitle Translator Inspires Future Translators at Translation Workshop

On February 11, 2026, Ms. Karina Suvapataya, an English instructor at Chitralada Vocational School and a subtitle translator for the renowned film studio GDH, delivered a talk entitled “What You Don’t See on Screen: Thai-English Subtitling in Practice.” The session was organized for students enrolled in ENG63-341 and ENG67-207 Thai–English Translation, with the aim of introducing them to the key concepts and techniques involved in subtitle translation.

As the speaker is currently working extensively with horror films, she structured her talk around this genre. At the beginning of the session, Ajarn Karina highlighted the differences between subtitling and dubbing, both of which play crucial roles in the film industry. She then discussed essential strategies for subtitle translation, emphasizing that translators must not only have strong command of the language pair but also be able to adapt the dialogue to reflect the cultural and contextual nuances of the target audience.

Toward the end of the session, the speaker gave students an opportunity to practice translating subtitles. She also presented memorable prizes to those who actively participated in answering questions, creating a lively atmosphere that kept the audience engaged throughout the session.
