On 6th December 2023, Mrs. Karina Suvapataya an English instructor at Chitralada School and also working for a renowned film studio as GDH as a subtitles translator, delivered a talk as part of the “Professional Translator Talks” series on how to translate a subtitle. The goal of the activity was to familiarize third-year students enrolled in ENG63-341 Thai-English Translation with ideas and methods utilized in subtitle translation.

At the beginning of the talks, Ajarn Karina pointed out the way to be a subtitles translator through her background which significantly inspired the students who have a resolution to work in this particular career field and followed with giving guidance concerning the trend of translation work in employment market due to the growth of Thai content in the international market. The preliminary process before getting a piece of subtitles was described as well. Then she delivered the strategies to translate subtitles. Translators need to understand not only language pair but also a perception of the contextual language adaptation.

At the end of the talk, the speaker also explained to the audience about the working environment which shows us how is important of soft skills in working with others. It certainly made the students more aware of that particular skill. Finally, she allowed the audience to ask questions about subtitles translation and related topics. With her two-hour talks, we believe that the students could further expand the knowledge from the talks to their learning and working for certain.
