EMAKING RURAL SPACES: COMMON PRACTICES OF THE RETURNEES

On June 9th, 2023, SLA Research Unit held the seminar on the topic of “Remaking Rural Spaces: Common Practices of the Returnees” presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Somrak Chaisingkananont.

The lecture is part of her developing manuscript and the research project on the development of cultural capital in the area around Wat Chedi (Ai Khai), Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Dr. Somrak talked about how the locals plays a role as local entrepreneur and cultural activist in their community through diversity of cultural capital after returning to their hometown due to work-related relocation.

Bionote Somrak Chaisingkananont holds Ph.D. in Southeast Asian Studies from National University of Singapore. Her specialization covers the area of cultural anthropology, ethnic studies, overseas Chinese, and cultural heritage. Her latest researh article is ‘Buluotuo Culture’: The Zhuang Oral Traditions published as a chapter in Oral Traditions, Continuities and Transformations in Northeast India and Beyond (2021).
