The English Drama Club, Walailak University, has staged a student-organized annual play “The Line”, to showcase students\u2019 acting skills in combination with advance use of English. The play was organized at Thaiburi Auditorium on March 23 and 24, 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The English Drama Club cerebrated its return to the stage after a long pause due to COVID-19 staging \u201cThe Line\u201d, a contemporary play challenging principles and social norms by portraying absurd nature of men. The one hour long-shot play features five complete strangers subject to different characters competing to be the first in line, each of them stakes a claim over being the first and justify their reasons from their perspective. This year\u2019s performance received interest from both Thai and international staff and students of Walailak University. However, the utmost purpose of the club has once again been achieved.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started this club to spread knowledge and experience for people here about Western theater culture. Therefore, we focus on the atmosphere of watching dramas in a form as international as possible,\u201d said Ms. Khamkaew Maneerote, Lecturer of School of Liberal Arts, Walailak University and Club Director.<\/p>\n

As for the English program students joining in cast and production team, the play serves as platform to gain hands-on experience both in application of English and other transferable soft-skills<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so happy staring in the play. The club is where I cultivate experience and opportunity to work alongside other talents. I have learned to overcome a number of challenges before we were able to open the curtain; long dialogues, very few casts, lots of bloggings, despite all these, we needed to own the stage, not to mention the use of English. I really feel a sense of achievement,\u201d said Mr. Krittin, a 3rd year English major student playing the part as \u201cMolly\u201d.<\/p>\n

The English Drama Club has continued to strengthen and develop the abilities of students with passion for drama and seek to maximize their English language potential. Since its conception, the club has produced a number of annual plays including The Sound of Music in 2016, followed by Beauty and the Beast, Prince of Egypt, Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street from 2017 to 2019 before coming to a haul during the pandemic.<\/p>\n
